Honors for 13 from Big Island

Honors for 13 from Big Island

Nine men and women from the Big Island recently graduated and four others were named to the dean’s list at Pacific University in Oregon.

The graduates and their degrees and majors are:

Janelle Del Castillo, master’s, education; Rustee-Ann Johansen, bachelor’s, biology; Valerie Kitamori, doctoral, optometry, with distinction; Rachel Kurohara, doctoral, optometry; Shannon Sakata, bachelor’s, dental hygiene studies; Cara Sumida, master’s, counseling psychology; Lauren Vieira, master’s, counseling psychology; and Erin Yoshida, bachelor’s, chemistry, summa cum laude, all of Hilo; and Robert Keliihoomalu, bachelor’s, media arts, of Kalapana.

Named to the dean’s list for fall semester 2015 were Jayla Nakayama, Tia Uehara, Liann Yamashita and Erin Yoshida, all of Hilo.

Agdeppa finishes research project

Worcester Polytechnic Institute student Amanda Agdeppa of Honokaa, a member of the class of 2017 majoring in biomedical engineering, recently completed a project in Hong Kong titled “Easing Marine Traffic in the Chinese White Dolphin Habitat.”

At WPI, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to addresses an important societal need or issue. About two-thirds of students complete a project at one of the university’s more than 45 off-campus project centers, which are located around the world.

Swanson joins Phi Kappa Phi

Bethany Swanson of Keaau recently was initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Swanson is pursuing a degree in psychology at Western Oregon University.

Phi Kappa Phi membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership.

Microsoft Office workshop offered

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo offers a Microsoft Office 2013 Suite intermediate skills workshop from 5-8 p.m. May 2-6 in UCB Room 105.

Tuition is $275 and includes the textbook.

The course is designed for individuals who have a basic understanding of Microsoft Office. Participants will learn how to use advanced workflows, techniques and tools in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. A USB flash drive is required.
